In Memory of Cllr Christine Melia

Christine wanted to become an elected Councillor because of one very simple reason – she just wanted to “help people,” and that sums up how she lived her life, helping others. She was never overtly political with her views in our political meetings and get togethers.

Christine’s generosity was not just about giving people stuff, she was far more generous in other ways such as; Her time, Her understanding, Her smile, Her sense of humour and fun, The way in which she viewed people as individuals, not by their job title or what they possessed and having empathy with others.

Christine worked closely with numerous members of the community struggling with disabilities and challenges, and was always championing that society treated them as individuals, not statistics. She was often their lone voice when they needed someone to speak up on their behalf – and would never, ever give in until they were treated with dignity, respect and support they deserved.

These examples typify how Christine’s values were not just abstract ideas, but how she lived her life. A mum, a partner, a nana, a Councillor. Christine will be sorely missed by us all at South Ribble, and the community has lost a real champion, a real socialist – she was proud to be called that. There may be many ways of making the world a better place, but Christine showed us that kindness may just be our best hope.
